My older boys also share a room and often want to listen to different things- so they each have these wireless headphones. We listen in a few different ways…when we listen at bedtime, I don’t love giving my kids a tablet (and all devices sleep in my room at night to charge so they don’t have them anyway).
Numerous times my kids have asked me to check out a book from the library (or they come home from school with one) that we started as an audiobook- the car is a great starting place!
LIBBY APP ECHO DOT SERIES
We also LOVE to listen to audiobooks and podcasts in the car…I feel like they are strapped in anyways…with not much else to do- so might as well have a listen! Another perk of listening in the car is that I can begin a new book or series and get them hooked! I look at it as a book commercial of sorts. I have found they can often listen for longer periods of time if their hands are busy while listening. Audiobooks are an excellent solution and make a great quiet time activity! One helpful thing we enjoy with audiobooks during rest time (or anytime during the day) is giving them something for their hands to do! This helps them to have some independent time away from you while still listening for a bit. With the exception of my oldest who took naps up until the day he started Kindergarten (and still sleeps a-lot!), most of my kids stopped napping around 4ish. You can find all our family’s favorite podcasts here if you need some good recommendations! This is a great way to cater to a shorter attention span and to convince them that it can be fun and entertaining, especially if they are resistant at first to audiobook or audio-listening. It has literally made bedtime a dream for me and they are still getting to enjoy a book or podcast of their choosing each night.Īnother great way to get started is to listen to short podcast episodes that are interesting and get them ‘hooked’ for the next episode. Our older boys (8 & 10) have to be in their rooms between 8:30-9:00 on a normal weeknight to be ‘tucked in.’ They may either read or listen to a podcast or audiobook.
So our solution is audiobooks with our older kiddos at bedtime. As much as I would love to snuggle up with each kiddo and read lots of books each night…that is not our reality right now (or probably anytime in the near future). To add to this chaos, my husband is often gone at bedtime due to work, community, or church commitments-so I’m flying solo. We have four kids all within 18mo-2 years of each other, so as you can imagine- bed time is a bit of a zoo. Seek out Text to Speech or Text2Speech as options. Our family started with audiobooks at bedtime mainly for logistical reasons. Some websites offer a human or computer interpretation of the material. There are a number of TTS apps/programs available such as Libby, Balabolka, DSpeech, and Mantano.
LIBBY APP ECHO DOT TV
The Amazon Echo, Tap, and Echo Dot and Fire TV all support text-to-speech for Kindle e-books. Amazon’s Alexa-enabled devices have the ability to read Kindle e-books aloud. A few options Learning System users have utilized are listed below. While the Learning System does not currently support an audio version of the learning modules, we have heard from students that they are able to utilize text-to-speech (TTS) alternatives with their e-reader devices. Yes, the SHRM Learning System does have a number of components that offer an audio experience, including the guided overview, eight Competency Quickstart videos, and six Competencies in Action videos. Does the SHRM Learning System have audio content?
